Who We Are
The East Pictou Rural Fair Committee is a subgroup of the District 13 Recreation and Planning Commission, which was formed in 1972 to fundraise and create recreation infrastructure and opportunities for the eastern rural Pictou County Community. With the efforts of the District 13 RPC, the community was able to build the Ivor MacDonald Memorial Arena in 1974. The arena has been maintained by the District 13 RPC ever since, and has also maintained the Thorburn Ball Field.
The East Pictou Rural Fair was a main fundraiser of the District 13 RPC from 1972 to 2002. In that time the main events of the fair involved ball tournaments, dances, horse pulls and children's carnival games. 20 years after the last fair a group of like minded-individuals began discussing opportunities to fundraise for recreation opportunities and create community events once again through the fair. Those individuals started working with the existing members of the District 13 RPC and the new committee for the East Pictou Rural Fair was born.
The committee consists of local residents and business owners of the eastern rural Pictou area who have been working hard to bring back many of the old events and introduce some new ones. We look forward to organizing events for the community members to enjoy, and hope to raise funds to contribute towards more recreation opportunities and upgrades in our local recreation facilities, such as the rink and the ballfield.
